Broadleaf's Quote module facilitates communication and negotiation between customer and seller. In this blog post, we will give a more in-depth look into the two core features of the quote module, adding custom items and custom pricing to orders being negotiated.

To access the features of the quote module, head to the quote edit page. Customers can choose a quote to edit from the customer account page, while admins choose a quote from the "Manage Quotes" page. Once on the quote edit page, the quote items and negotiation history are visible. Admins are able to modify prices for individual items from this page. Both admins and customers are able to add new items to the quote from here as well. These new items could be items from the catalog or custom items for this specific quote.

Requesting custom items can be as granular as you want, ranging from custom label types to non tangible products such as product training from the seller. When the customer doesn’t know the product options for non tangible items such as support or training, the customer can add the custom item of training and leave the price blank to allow the seller to provide pricing and details. True to the nature of the Quote module, customers can also request a custom item with a price in mind to start negotiations with the seller. Once the seller has modified the custom item with their price, the customers can continue to modify their quote to continue the negotiation or accept the quote as is.

When modifying custom items, both sellers and customers have the ability to leave notes on their quotes to give more context to their modification. Using a training analogy, if the seller only provides training in 3-hour increments, they can modify the price to reflect a 3-hour training and leave a note to let the customer know in case they need longer than 3 hours. Another example of this would be a customer requesting a bulk order of an item for a discounted price, the seller can modify the price to reflect the amount they believe is appropriate for the bulk order and explain their price change to the customer in the quote notes.

Quote time constraints further allows sellers to provide customers an opportunity to consider offers and complete the purchase online. Customers can also be given a clear offer expiration, aiding in price negotiation.
