Project Overview

Broadleaf Commerce was initially selected by Waste Management to power its Dumpster.com line of business. As the project progressed, it became clear that Broadleaf Commerce was the best choice for all of Waste Management's lines of business including residential and commercial waste disposal and recycling services.

Solution

Waste Management used Broadleaf Commerce to implement a new generation of Dumpster.com for the purpose of renting dumpsters. Originally, it was thought that Dumpster.com and other Waste Management eCommerce assets would remain separate. Soon after, a decision was made to create an integrated shopping experience that would allow customers a single place to shop for Waste Management services, view order history, and manage account information.

It was important that Broadleaf Commerce provided many of the eCommerce features that Waste Management required. It was also very important that Broadleaf Commerce provided an architecture that allowed for customization, flexible deployment, and flexible integration. Finally, it was also important to Waste Management that Broadleaf Commerce could be extended, customized, managed, deployed, and maintained by an in-house technical team.

Results

WM.com provides an integrated catalog, shopping cart, order history, and customer profile. It serves the U.S. and Canadian markets in their respective currencies and in English and French. It runs on IBM WebSphere Application Server and integrates with other Waste Management systems for content management, security, fulfillment, and email communication. Since go-live it has been completely managed and maintained in house without the need for external consulting services.
